Upcycled Certification Program: Beta Program 

Calls for Expressions of Interest

Come help build the Upcycled Food Economy while reducing food waste.

We are looking for companies at the front line of the upcycled food industry to pilot the new Upcycled Certification Program. 

 

Beta Program participants will help test the effectiveness and practicality of the Certification Program and inform any necessary revisions to its proposed implementation. We need your help! Beta participants will lead the adoption of the requirements to ensure that they deliver on quality and usability. It is paramount that we engage with a myriad of stakeholders to ensure a wide variety of input. This is critical to the success of the new Certification Program. 

 

Interested? Submit an Expression of Interest form by 11:59 PM EST on March 10, 2021. The Expression of Interest form can be found below. Please read through all dates, requirements, expectations and eligibility below before submitting the form. 

 

The Upcycled Food Association will select and notify interested companies of participation by March 24, 2021. Selected companies will be asked to complete a UFA Participation Agreement and commit to the program by March 31, 2021. Beta Program will start accepting applications on February 24, 2021.

Beta Program Benefits

Participants in the Beta Program will have the opportunity to pioneer the world’s first upcycling certification program aimed at reducing food waste and growing the upcycled economy. Benefits to participation are as follows:

Get early access to the Upcycled Certification Program and have the first chance to test and give feedback on the certification processes.


Lead the way in demonstrating the amazing value of the Upcycled Certification Program as a practical pathway to achieving food waste reduction.


Gain recognition in marketing and promotional activities as we launch the certification program here in the U.S. and eventually globally. 


Help accelerate the adoption of the Upcycled Certification Program by donating your time to help us work out the “kinks”- thus helping to grow the upcycled food economy and further reduce food waste. 

Eligibility

​We are seeking a diverse group of Beta program participants. The program is open to companies seeking to certify upcycled products and/or ingredients for sale in the United States. A limited number of participants will be chosen for the program. Participants must: 

  • Pursue the full certification for their product and/or ingredient 

  • Have at least two products or ingredients that you are interested in getting certified

  • Have had any ingredients/products in the marketplace for one year and have sold the ingredients/ products seeking the certification in the United States for at least 3 months.

  • Help ensure diverse perspectives by: 

    • Product Type - product or ingredient in certification categories: Food & Beverage, Cosmetics, Household Cleaners, Companion Pet Food, Dietary Supplements,Personal Care Products, and Harvest level operations

    • Company Size 

    • Geographic Location

    • Market Sector and Gross Sales Tiers 

  • Complete certification within designated time frame

  • Provide feedback (via surveys and/or discussions) 

  • Agree to be represented in marketing and promotional materials

* Please note: UFA is working to inform USDA-FSIS about the Upcycled Certification Program. UFA cannot at this time guarantee USDA-FSIS approval of products displaying the Upcycled Certification Program Mark.

Requirements & Expectations for Participants

Please be patient with us - the program will be brand new and we are still working out the kinks! Please be prompt with your responses. Since the program is new, expect an increase in emails to help us better understand your production practices and how the paperwork can guide answering compliance questions. Requirements and expectations for participation are as follows:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest form by March 10, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST.

  • Sign and submit Participation Agreement by March 31, 2021 to register intent to participate​.

  • Pay Certifying Body (CB) fee and submit CB application by March 31, 2021. The separate application fee will be waived for Beta participants who are current UFA Members (Not Associate Members). The CB fee will be based on your designation and number of products/ingredients submitted for review. Please see pay schedule here. **See more information below.

  • Work with designated Certifying Body, following their certification process​.

  • Complete and submit exit survey​.

  • Commit to collecting and submitting all required documentation to fulfill requirements within the certification program and to completing feedback forms in a timely manner.

  • Participate in UFA activities to promote, market and publicize the Upcycled Certification Program (this may include: public relations activities, web and social media content-posts, videos, etc.).

  • Certify at least two upcycled products and/or ingredients to the Certification Standard. 

Additional Information about Certification Fees

 

The CB fee does not include an additional Licensing Agreement fee of $195. Licensing Agreement Fee is due by April 23, 2021 and should be submitted directly to UFA.​

* Please note that participants of the Beta Program are required to complete an exit survey. Your exit survey will be due one week after receiving your formal approval email upon completion of the certification process. You will have completed the Beta Program once you are certified and have completed the exit survey.

By completing this form you are hereby expressing your interest in participating in the Upcycled Certification Beta Program. The UFA will notify selected companies for participation in the Beta program by March 24, 2021. Selected companies will be asked to complete a participation agreement and must commit to the program by March 31, 2021.

Please make sure you have read through the Upcycled Certification Standard thoroughly before submitting an Expression of Interest Form. 

In order to participate in the Beta Program you must have a minimum of 2 products or ingredients (or a combination of both) that you plan to certify.
